Becoming a Member

Eligibility for admission will be subject to the applicant's ability to satisfy the requirements of the Rules of Association. A brief description of membership categories follows. For more detailed information contact your local Branch Executive or the State Secretary. Note: Except for Corporate Members, membership is only open to persons, not companies or partnerships.

Membership Categories

  • Chartered Member 
    Chartered Membership is open to all members who are Licensed, Registered or Accredited (depending on the relevant requirements of the State/Territory in which they reside), they must have served at least one year as a Principal Member, achieving the required CPD and sign a contract to maintain CPD throughout their membership.

  • Principal Member 
    To gain the category of Principal member, a person must have completed at least one year as a General Member/Building Designer. At this level CPD is voluntary but a Principal Member must complete one year before being eligible to upgrade to Chartered Member.

  • General Member/Building Designer
    A General Member/Building Designer must be able to provide technical or tertiary qualifications and or demonstrate a suitably level of experience as deemed necessary by the association Management Committee at the time of application. At the time of entry, CPD is voluntary but encouraged, and the new member must be a member for at least one full year before qualifying to upgrade to a Principal Member.

    General Member, any person may join as a normal General Member.

  • Student Member
    Student category is available to bona fide students in training in a recognised Institution for the profession of Building Designers.
  • Corporate Member
    This category of membership is open to companies in building related industries. Corporate members will receive the Associations newsletters and be entitled to attend branch meetings.

  • Procedure For Membership
    Complete the Application Form, giving all the details needed by the Membership Applications Sub Committee. The Committee reserves the right to call for an additional portfolio of work and in special circumstances may request a personal interview. Forward the Application Form, relevant documents and fees to the State Secretary for processing.

As a member, you are asked to make a genuine effort to attend Meetings, Seminars and Conferences which are arranged from time to time; to keep your technical and personal knowledge at a high level; to co-operate with other persons in the Building Design Industry; and to use your ability and training for the benefit of the Community and the Association. Professional Development is compulsory for Chartered Members.
